Reflection – Anna Byrne DC

Bigger, Better, Faster.
“Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you do not love the Father. Everything that belongs to the world – what the sinful- self desires, what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of- none of this comes from the Father; it all comes from the world. The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God love forever.” 1 John 2: 15-17.
Holy Spirit,
Help me not to love the things of this world.
Give me the wisdom to know that having the latest and greatest
does not bring true happiness.
Give me the courage to say no to people who promise me good times
but only lead me away from you.
Give me the strength to resist the things that promise instant happiness
but in reality bring unhappiness.
Help me to know the difference between the things
that are of God and the things that are only passing away.

Is Nice in Me
“Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, you criticize and judge the Law. I you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it. God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?” James 4: 11-12

Dear Lord,
Yesterday I was really going at it! Judging people, I mean. I had a clever put down for quite a few of my friends especially the ones who are “good.”
All that judging left good at the time because everyone was laughing at the stuff I said. Later, though, I felt a bit sick – in the pit of my stomach. Is that what guilt feels like?
What I’m trying to say, God, is I’m sorry. You know I can be nasty. I’m getting tired of it, others are too, I think. I don’t blame them.
One of my friends is just nice -plain and simple. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her say a mean thing about anyone. And everyone really likes her. She’s popular just because she is nice to everyone. How simple is that? Lord, do you think I can become like that? Can you help me?

Dear God,
great alchemist,
you made a universe out of nothing.
You made saints of most the unlikely souls.
Refine even the dross of my day to gold.
Make me a gift worthy of you.
Father, help me to know my place.
